The Ultimate Buyer’s Guide to Weighted Vests

Best weighted vestBest Weighted Vests 2019. Find our Weighted vest buying guides, comparison charts and reviews to help you buy the right weighted vest for your health and exercise needs.

If you’re looking for the best weighted vest in terms of comfort, features and weight capacity then our top recommendation would be: V-Force Weight Vest

However, if you’re looking for something with a slightly lighter weight and cardio training is your main aim then our top pick is: Hyperwear Hyper Vest PRO

Best Weighted Vests With Big Weights

Most weighted vests are designed for big athletic guys. These can generally carry more weight and tend to be of a generally bigger size, perfect for the larger person. Fortunately many are also adjustable for smaller guys out there. Here are our top two picks for you.

1. V-Force Weight Vests A fantastic vest, the best bang for your buck out of all the vests we have reviewed. This is roomy enough for the bigger person and has weight options all the way up to 150lbs.

2. MIR® Weighted Vest – Many different weight options with a good price.

Best Weighted Vests For Cardio Training

Comfort and fit are the main consideration for these vests as if you try to use one of the heavier vests not designed for running you will find yourself hurting yourself. Here are two recommendations for you.

1. Hyperwear Hyper Vest PRO – A little on the pricey side but well worth the investment. Odour resistant, cool and comfortable. It can also be upgraded with heavier weights in the future.

2. Tone Fitness Weighted Vest – Only offering 10 lbs of weight but well made and comfortable. This vest is well reviewed and we love its simplicity.

Best Weighted Vests For Women

Not all vests are suitable for women. Often the weights can be uncomfortable on the chest. Thankfully there are specially designed vests out there for women although they generally do not have as many weights as their male-targeted counterpart.

Here is one that we recommend.

1. MIR® Women’s Adjustable Weighted Vest – A good vest with a decent amount of weight and with cutouts to avoid any uncomfortable weight on your breasts. Only complaints are that the straps can be fiddly and it is not machine washable.

V-Force provides a great range of vests that are versatile and exceptionally durable weight vests which we think are the best currently available.

There are a plethora of styles, sizes and weights available appropriate for both beginners and hardcore fitness enthusiasts. One thing all the varieties have in common is their build quality is second to none. The weights available range from a reasonably light 25 lbs all the way up to a back-breaking 150lbs.

V-Force has done a great job in creating some of the heaviest and most versatile weighted vests available in 2019.

It is comfortable to wear and constructed with reinforced stitching and is made with triple layered nylon. They are so confident in the build quality that this product comes with a LIFETIME guarantee which is outstanding.

There are 3 styles available with various weight options. We recommend buying the short 45lbs vest. You can always buy an attachment later if you need to add more weight. There is also a perspiration liner available separately.

This is a really comfortable vest allowing a full range of motion without any discomfort.

The padded shoulder straps are available with a narrow option if you are slight but are still wide enough to spread the weight comfortably. The wider shoulder straps still allow a free range of motion. The attachment straps are 2″ wide so there’s absolutely no wriggling or pinching.

The cost will be prohibitive for some but this is a one-time investment and with the lifetime warranty we think this well worth the money.

The MiR weighted Vest has been designed without a specific niche to fill but instead have designed numerous different vests, each one designed to fulfil the needs of all sportsmen whether beginner or advanced.

They have numerous options available. Vests are offered that have been designed specifically for women (which we think is the best women’s weighted vest is the best out there and have provided a separate review below), short vests, long vests, narrow shouldered vests and lot’s of different weight options.

The MiR Weighted Vest includes individual weight pouches that allows one to adjust the weight quite easily. The vests have changing weight capacities ranging from 10 lbs for the beginner up to 200 lbs for the really strong among you. The soap bar sized weights are not difficult to slide in and from the pouches, which are located on the front and back of the weighted vest.

The lower and upper positioning of the pockets allows for easier breathing. The sides of the vest are open to help keep you cool.

The vest fits comfortably and doesn’t restrict the movement of the arms or abdomen. The vest moves with you instead of against you.

The shoulders of the vest are double padded and each vest also has multiple straps placed mid-chest, that prevent slippage and bounce during exercise.

Setting up the vest can be a bit difficult as ours did not come with instructions so we had to figure out how to attach the straps. Luckily we found a video on youtube explaining how this is done.

Best Weighted vest for cardio work: Hyperwear Hyper Vest Pro

Our top pick for running and cardio work is the Hyperwear Hyper Vest Pro. The first thing you will notice is its incredibly thin profile. This is the slimmest vest available on the market today.

Coming with only 10 lbs as standard, this is a vest specifically designed for cardio work. Each weight is only 1/4 inch thick and weighs only 2.25 oz which really keeps the vest compact and allows you to gradually add weight as you go. Don’t worry as if you need more weight, you can purchase extra and attach up to 65 lbs to the XL vest.

Available in 5 different sizes, this vest caters for all sized bodies and is suitable for both men and women.

It has openings in both sides to allow extra ventilation and has drawcords that you use to tighten the vest to your body.

The vest wraps the torso securely but allows full chest expansion and contraction for respiration while the weights stay in place.

There are 80 weight pockets on this vest to equally distribute weight exactly where you need it.

Unlike a lot of its competitors the Hyper Vest is made from an odour resistance, breathable wicking material which is a big plus. No additional undershirts or liners are needed.

Although slightly bulky and with a rather limited weight range of between 20 lbs to 60 lbs, this is a well-constructed vest with a great price.

This comes in a one size fits all style so it will not be suitable for everyone. It is well constructed from a strong, nylon fabric and feels very sturdy. The stitches and seams are almost invisible.

It fit our test subject nice and tight although if you of a smaller frame we don’t think this will fit particularly well.

The weights are sandbags which are not as easy to install and remove as the iron bar alternatives out there.

The vest is slightly longer than some alternatives and the bottom of it tends to sit around the top of your stomach.

All in all, we like this weight vest. It is a fantastic price but with some minor limitations.

Best Weighted vest for women: MIR® Women’s Adjustable Weighted Vest

We love this vest specifically made for women. It features an X shape design with cutouts where your breasts are. This makes it much more comfortable than a regular weight vest for larger breasted women. The weight is designed to sit between the breasts avoiding squashing them.

The vest holds a maximum of 30 lbs in weight which cannot be increased at a later date. These weights are removable and are solid rather than sand which we prefer.

The vest has open sides to help with ventilation and is secured around the waist with a velcro strap. The strap does not necessarily provide the greatest of fits and if you have a naval piercing we think that this could chafe.

The overall size of this vest may be an issue for some. We noticed that the shoulder straps were quite wide and could limit your range of movement if you had narrow shoulders.

The CAP Barbell weighted vest is a well-priced weight vest, made of sturdy construction and available in weights ranging from 20 lbs to 80 lbs.

It has plenty of pockets for the weights which are the iron bar type and not the more clumsy sandbag type. The weights are distributed nicely and the load is spread evenly around your body. Each weight weighs 2.5 lbs.

The vest has one Velcro strap to secure it around your waist and we found that although usable it would have been better if it had a second strap to secure the vest more snugly against our torso.

The 80 lb vest is quite long so you would need to be of above average height for it to fit comfortably. On the flip side if you are a giant of a man then this vest is not for you as we found the adjustability limited and think it would be too snug a fit.
We would recommend getting the largest weight vest as you cannot add more weight to the lower weighted vests.

The Valeo WV40 weight vest is a well made, breathable vest that fits well and is available at a good price.
This vest only comes in the one size and although advertised as one size fits all it is actually a little on the long size. The vest seemed to slip off at times. Because of this, we suggest buying this vest only if you are of a taller frame.

This vest has a number of pockets around the chest and torso to distribute the weight evenly while you work out. The weights are lead shot in bags that can be a little tricky to remove and replace but once we got the hang of it we found them fine.

The vest is only available in a 40 lb version which is o.k for most exercises you would want to use it for.
The shoulder padding is strengthened to prevent excess pull or pinching on your own neck and shoulders. It comes in one size that ought to fit most folks.

HumanX Weight Vest

The HumanX weighted vest made by harbinger makes our list for its good construction and fit although we are disappointed with the limited weight options.

There are 3 different weight sizes available, 10 lbs, 20 lbs and 40 lbs. Each vest contains 20 individual weights. The 10 lb vest has weight increments of 0.5 lbs, the 20 lb vest has increments of 1 lb and the 40 lbs vest has increments of 2 lbs.

The weights are comprised of sandbags inside plastic containers which are a great way of dealing with the use of sand. The plastic containers make the weights very easy to insert and remove.

The vest is marketed as one size fits all and is very well constructed. There is a large velcro belt that tightens around the waist and keeps it secure. You can tighten this vest right up so it fits nice and snug against your body meaning you could use this vest to run in.

It has double padding on the shoulders and chest which is a nice bonus and means it is very comfortable to wear. The vest has been cut with a nice shape so that you get a full range of motion. It sits high enough that squats are not a problem and the shoulders are free to move in all directions.

It is not machine washable but you are able to hand wash this without causing any problems.

Overall a nice vest but with limited upgrade and size options.

Tone Fitness Weighted Vest

A very comfortable lightweight vest designed for adding extra resistance to your cardio workouts.
The manufacturer markets this product as “One size fits most” and this is true. We found it not suitable if you are either small in height or of a very petite frame. Also, we found the shoulder to be relatively narrow and therefore if you are broad shouldered this is probably not suitable for you.

The weight is not removable and is only available in one option – 12 lbs. This is suitable for small resistance work but not if you have larger strength goals in mind.

The design is made primarily for women. Most of the weight is on the back as the front is cut out so no pressure is applied onto the breast. The front is secured by a plastic buckle that sits just above your sternum.

The neoprene material is soft and contains some reflective strips for if you are running at night. There is also a pocket to keep your cellphone or mp3 player while you workout.

The reason this makes the list is mainly because of the price which is impossible to beat.

A Buyer’s Guide to Weighted Vests:
What You Need to Look For

Why would you want to purchase a weighted vest? Why is a vest more beneficial and better than a backpack with weights in? Because all the weight in a backpack is held on your back and away from your centre of gravity it will place an excessive amount of weight on your back, making you lean forwards and increases the risks of damaging your back and leaving you with bad posture.

Vests fit over your shoulders and comfortably spread the weight evenly over both the front and back of your upper body. They often allow the adjustable weight to be fitted, making it easy that you have the exact amount of weight fitted for what you are trying to accomplish.

But how can you start choosing one? Let’s look at five things that you must always consider before you purchase.

Material and Build Quality

First, you must be concerned with the build quality of the vest you’re considering buying. As you are well aware, exercise equipment can be expensive, and there are few things as annoying as purchasing a piece of gear only to have it break or fail before you get to properly use it! There are a number of things you should consider before choosing to buy a weighted vest.

Find out what material the vest is made with. Because you will be using these when exercising it is important that the material is sweat and tear resistant. If the fabric of your vest isn’t anti-bacterial or antimicrobial then just imagine what will happen when you work up a sweat while wearing one!

Rust can be an issue with the weights so be sure the weights are either manufactured from a coated alloy so they are protected from rusting or are made from a non-rusting material such as sand.

The weight vest should be adjustable. Having the ability to increase or reduce the quantity of weight in it can play a large part in helping you achieve your goals. Lots of people like having the capability to reduce the quantity of weight for one exercise, such as running but then increase the quantity of weight when performing muscle growth exercises such as pull-ups. Having an adjustable vest will make it possible for you to get a lot of different uses from it.

Keep in mind that you want the weights to be easily adjustable as this will save you time during your workout.

Fit and Comfort

You need to think about the way the vest fits and comfort when wearing it. Size is an issue as an incorrectly sized vest could cause sores or put too much of the load in the wrong place. Many people ignore this and don’t realise that having a comfortable vest with actually encourage you to use it more. Comfortable gear that fits correctly is extremely important. If your gear doesn’t feel good, you will spend more time thinking and worrying about it and this energy could be better spent on your workout.

If possible, try on the vest you are considering purchasing or at the very least buy from somewhere that has a decent refund policy so you can try it and see for yourself.

When it isn’t possible, see if you can find videos or images of people using and wearing the vest. At least then you have some idea of the fit and capabilities of the vest.

Weight

You need to consider what weight you want the vest to have and what are it’s upgrade options. Consider how much the vest weighs by itself and how much weight is included. The weights in the vest should be spread around evenly and preferably you should be able to change the position of should you need to for balance and comfort.

You also need to consider your current fitness level. You want it to be suitable for you to use right away but have room to increase the weight as you progress and get stronger. If a vest is too light then it won’t provide you with a good workout, and if the vest is too heavy it can cause injury.

Accessories

Consider the kinds of accessories that you can add to the vest. Does it contain space for your mobile phone or iPod? Can you get a sweat resistant sleeve to wear under the vest? Does it come in your preference of colour or perhaps it has reflective strips for when you run at night? If you are looking for a versatile vest then you should take these things into consideration.

Take your time before choosing a weighted vest, asses your options and you will be able to choose a fantastic vest that will benefit you for a long time.
